Chapter 8

“Sonia.”

Her grandmother sat on the other side of the table, hands to her cheeks, staring at her. She had just dropped the bombshell and waited for the older woman to say something. Anything.

“I knew when I met Andrei he was special, I just had no idea he was your fated.” Adela slowly rose from her seat. “Come, păpusă, and I will help you pack. This is very important, and you must look your best when you meet your husband-to-be.”

She followed her grandmother up the stairs to Sonia’s room, where the woman opened her closet and pulled out the suitcase. “Nana! You think this is okay? A man––no a vampire––has to kill me to break his curse.”

Her grandmother placed the suitcase on the bed then turned and grabbed Sonia by the arms. “Search your heart. What does it tell you?”

She looked into the eyes of the woman who had been her only family for the last four years, and for the first time truly noticed the flecks of gold that intermingled through the brown. One thing she didn’t see there was worry. “I don’t know. I mean, I’ve dreamt of him so much, he feels like a part of me. My heart aches for him, but this is all too strange.”

“Oh, Sonia, my precious granddaughter.” Adela moved a hand up to her cheek. “You come from a long line of strong gypsy women, and fate has chosen you to join with a man from the mist.” Adela shook her head. “Not just any man but the king. You shall become a queen of a very rich culture. Dig deeper. What does your heart tell you?”

Sonia swallowed and closed her eyes. She searched for the answer and found what she already knew. “I will not truly die. My life will change, but I will live.”

Adela smiled. “Then trust yourself and trust the cards. They will not lie to you.” She gave Sonia a quick hug before backing away. “Pack your things, I have something for you.” She hurried from the room, and Sonia went to her closet and began pulling things from hangers. After she had a few items in the case, Nana came back in the room, clutching a pouch.

“Your own deck of cards.” She pressed them into Sonia’s hand.

“Oh, Nana, you didn’t have to do that, but thank you.” She kissed the elderly woman’s cheek. “This means a lot.” She might have appeared skeptical in the past about the cards, but deep down she believed. It was time she embraced her heritage, and this meant a lot to her grandmother as well. They only had each other. She pulled the woman into a hug.

“I’ll miss you while I’m gone,” she whispered.

“I will miss you too, păpusă. I am so proud of you, and I know your mother is too. She is looking down and guiding you.”

Tears stung Sonia’s eyes then rolled down her cheek as she pulled away. “I miss her so much.”

“I know. So do I.” Adela patted Sonia on the arm.
